– A Billion-Ton Scale Integrated Oil & Gas Field

The Shunbei Oil & Gas Field, located in the central-western part of the Tarim Basin, is a core project of Sinopec’s “Deep Earth Project”.

SSC has tackled critical challenges such as safe and rapid drilling in ultra-deep formations, establishing a comprehensive petroleum engineering technology system centered on processes, tools, instruments, and materials for deep and ultra-deep reservoirs. It has drilled 14 ultra-deep wells exceeding 9,000 meters, achieving the goal of “penetrating the underground Everest within 100 days” and setting the record for the deepest onshore well in Asia. This demonstrates its full capability in engineering design, construction, and technical services for complex formations beyond 9,000 meters, marking a significant leap in oil and gas engineering technology into the ultra-deep domain. By supporting the implementation of the “Deep Earth Project” in the Tarim Basin, the company contributed to the discovery of the billion-ton scale Shunbei Oil & Gas Field, providing robust support for the exploration and development of ultra-deep reservoirs in the region. To address specific challenges in Shunbei, such as simultaneous leakage and collapse in the second section, fractured formations in the third section, and high temperature & high pressure (HTHP) in deep zones, an iteratively optimized three-section well construction technology system was developed. This reduced the drilling cycle for three-section wells to under 100 days–a 55% time saving and 69.7% cost reduction compared to traditional five-section wells. The system is supported by a range of self-developed HTHP technologies. First one, MVLog Full-Series HTHP Logging Platform: with a maximum temperature rating of 260°C, it supports both wireline and memory operation modes, achieving a 94% success rate in acquiring target zone logging data. Second one, TEL185/200 HTHP Directional Tool: Rated for 200°C, it achieves a 95% success rate per run. Third one, Self-Developed Well Testing Tools: comprising 75 tools across 6 series, including the flagship SSC-JMR High-Performance Mechanical Packer. Rated for 232°C and 105 MPa, it is the world's first packer of its kind with integrated circulation functionality.
